The boards are Medium Density Overlay Panels or MDO.  It is a paintable surface made of plywood with weather resistant resin overlay bonded to the wood by heat and pressure. MDO is valued for defect-free composition and highly uniform density that allows it to be cut, rout, shape and drill cleanly.  It was developed for signs. The paint finishes on MDO are up to three times more durable.  MDO is not MDF which confuses some but MDF will not hold up in outside weather.  The boards are primed then painted and sealed with Varathane Spar Urethane sealer.  This provides maximum UV protection to guard against sun damage.
